I was born and raised in Guatemala. My interest in food was sparked at a very young age while growing up in a bakery as a family business. The bakery was established by my Grandfather, on my mother's side of the family. At its peak, "Imperial Bakery" as it was named, was a well known successful family business in Guatemala City.
Whether it was the smell of fresh baked bread, pastries, cakes, or traditional home cooked food, there was almost always something cooking on the stove or in the wood clay oven. This sense of tradition is what inspires me to share my culinary skills and passion for food with you.
While growing up in a food and family business, I discovered that I wanted to be a farmer. So after graduating with a High School Diploma as Bachelor in Science and Literature, I enrolled in University in Agriculture Engineering in Guatemala City. But the responsibilities of work prevented me from finishing my studies. At twenty two I immigrated to Pasadena, California, where I lived for six years. In the summer of 1990 I moved to Ottawa, and in 1991 I enrolled in the Horticulture Technician program at Algonquin College where I graduated in 1994.
I am just as passionate for food as I am for Horticulture, and to be able to combine the two fields gives me an edge as a Home Chef. Many of the fresh herbs I use in my recipes are grown by me year round, utilizing Hydroponic Growing Techniques.
Hydroponics, is the science of growing plants without soil, and it is one of the most interesting advances in modern Horticulture. The natural mineral elements required for plant growth are used to produce healthier and more nutritious herbs and vegetables that are free of weeds and soil-borne pest and diseases.
Cooking Wonders Home Chef Service was created as a result of a long life passion for good, tasty, healthy and satisfying way of eating. Cooking Wonders Home Chef Service allows me to share with you "An Authentic Expression for Latin Tasty Food".
What is "An Authentic Expression for Latin Tasty Food"? It simply means food bursting with colors, flavors and lots of nutrients; avoiding processed foods with added preservatives and sugars. Latin Food does not mean Hot-tongue burning spicy food. Latin Food does not mean that you can only taste one single overpowering ingredient. Spices and marinades, whether mild or hot, play a key part in making Latin Foods both distinctive and tasty.
Through Cooking Wonders Home Chef Service my goal is to get people talking about what they should be eating, and to focus on more traditional and healthier foods rather than big quantities of cheap food. I want to create awareness in the community and inspire people to eat healthy.
My basic message is: The old ways are the best ways.
Returning to more traditional eating habits can lead to a better health. Fresh made salsa is a great way to season everything. Tasty sauces, which are common in almost every Latin American country, are invariably high in nutrients, low in fat, and contain a variety of healthy vegetables and spices. Another Latin American custom is the serving of soup before a meal. Drinking or eating a soup before your meal will help you cut down on calories.
